I would like to voice my opposition to the continuation of having exotic animals housed in Rowan county. I live about 1/2 mile from the former Metro Zoo and am appalled that this was ever allowed to exist in Rowan.
If memory serves me, I believe the original owner was forced to leave another county if not state in order to move here. Now that the “Zoo” is closed, it seems a perfect opportunity for our county commission to pass an ordinance forbidding this type of land use. Our county is already blessed with Dan Nicholas Park which offers plenty of animal habitat for our citizens.
We moved into our new home in 1995 and it wasn’t long before we could hear the roars of big cats every evening around feeding time.
Lest we forget the “Sydney” episode, I have no assurance that one or more of these bigh cats could escape and reak havoc on our community. There have been too many problems over there already. The escape of Sydney, someone bitten by a wolf, illegal gaming equipment and animals not allowed under USDA guidelines.
I am also extremely doubtful that the new “owner” of “Tiger World” has such high financial backing. If Chester County S.C. doesn’t want it, why in the world would we?
In closing, I would implore the county commission to forbid this to continue. Since it is closing already, it seems to be the perfect time to close it down completely, once and for all.
I would like to voice my opposition to “Tiger World”. Having lived near the zoo way before it was around, I feel the neighbors of this area don’t need another round of this. The zoo wasn’t wanted from where he relocated from, and neither was “Tiger World”. Why should we have to worry about our kids and pets with this in the back yard?
The zoo or its owner were not the best of neighbors. And for those people who think it is great to have this around, let the people of Cook Road have your name and address. We will be glad to have this relocated in your back yard. We will even pay for the gas for moving this. Yeah, that is what I thought…..it is fine and dandy as long as it isn’t in your back yard.
The neighbors, the surrounding community, and myself are very opposed to this. No ill will to this lady, I am sure she means well. But we don’t intend to have to deal with this all over again.
We will be at any zoning, board meeting that addresses this. The commissioners are already getting hammered on this. Do what is right by the people of this county!
Thanks for giving the opportunity to voice opinions here. While I don’t live on Cook Road I wouldn’t hesitate to live near this zoo. I’ve read about the negative publicity from the previous owner, and have visited the zoo under the previous owner. I didn’t feel like it wasn’t safe to visit. I don’t think it’s fair to judge the new owner based on everything that we’ve read about the previous owner. I’m sure the new owner is aware of the challenges due to the publicity that’s been given and it sounds like she intends to reinforce the cages and do everything necessary to provide a safe zoo. If the new owner passes all the inspections and legal regulations to have these exotic animals, why not let the zoo open? Your children are fortunate to be able to see these animals that one day may be extinct. Yes, these tigers are wild, and yes very dangerous, but if they are kept in proper habitats, everyone of all ages can enjoy them. God gave us these beautiful cats and while they still inhabit this earth I’d like to be able to see them. I hope the county commissioners realize what an opportunity this is and that others in the county will speak up.
