From the Bull — and I do mean BULL — penNotes ‘n’ quotes … It seems Salisbury High School has found its next girl basketball coach. Sources on Lincolnton Road will only say a name has been linked to the job, taking over for Dee Miller, who took over for Jennifer Shoaf, who was suspended before the season. Sources also say Shoaf has been out there applying for jobs in other counties. I love using the words, “Sources say.” All we can say for now is the new coach is supposedly a familiar face to local sports fans. Why can’t our source say more? Because the ol’ school board must approve the decision. Stay tuned. What do you think about the Salisbury girls basketball situation? Tell me. • The future of Rowan County Basketball Player of the Year Justin Vanderford is still up in the air. The East Rowan star, who averaged 19.5 points per game, has been named to the East-West All-Star Game, but at 5-foot-9, has not been able to get college coaches to offer. Coach Greg McKenzie, contacted on Wednesday, is still as frustrated as he was when the season ended. Vanderford has been accepted at East Carolina, and at this point, wants to play there. McKenzie said he recently had a 20-minute conversation with an ECU assistant, wanting the Pirates to save a spot as a walk-on. ECU has only 11 scholarship players, McKenzie said, and walk-ons will be essential. But as of now, Vanderford must go to a tryout and prove himself. Nothing will be saved for him. “I asked the coach, ‘What if Justin is MVP of the East-West game and everybody asks him where he’s playing in college?” McKenzie said. “I’m going to say he wants to play at ECU but they won’t save him a spot.” Do you think Vanderford can succeed in college? Tell me. • Davidson County Community College coach Matt Ridge will be at North Rowan on Thursday to sign Cavalier star Bryson Gaymon and keep that Rowan County pipeline going east to nearby Lexington. South Rowan’s W.J. Parks and East Rowan’s Kurt Misenheimer played for the Storm last season. Gaymon could have been a very good college football receiver but will keep his talents indoors. Do you think he chose the right sport? Tell me. • I think the Cincinnati Bengals did a good job in the NFL draft. They filled their needs. They took a bail bondsman in the first round and a probation officer in the second. It’s a joke, OK? • I heard Michael Vick is playing football for the prison team. The good news is, he finally found a team better than the Falcons. Ba-boom-boom. • Dave Robbins, a former Catawba grad, has retired after 30 years of coaching basketball at Virginia Union. The 65-year-old won 713 games, second in the CIAA only to Winston-Salem State’s Big House Gaines, who won 828. What do you remember about Robbins? Tell me. • If I found out anything over the past year, it’s the readers of the Post want Appalachian State football covered in the fall. We covered all but two of their home games last season and we’re expecting to cover all but one this year. The one we’ll miss? The Friday night ESPN contest against Wofford. Colleges should not be playing on Friday nights. Those lights are saved for the high schools. What do you think about colleges playing on Friday night? Tell me. • The one Appalachian State game we won’t miss? The opener at LSU. • One Appalachian State player with local ties, Gordon Witte, is concentrating on football only. The three-time state prep wrestling champ, is expected to concentrate on football only. And coaches in Boone say he had a great spring. And by the way, he wants you to call him Gordy. Does it surprise you Witte is doing so well? Tell me. • Livingstone football, which was winless last year, has added another local face: Bryan Aycoth. The former West Rowan quarterback who won county Offensive Player of the Year in his senior year, went to East Carolina, left Greenville, and is now going to compete for the quarterback’s job in the fall. He’s taking classes at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College. Aycoth says he has been living in the weight room. You can tell. He is a quarterback in a linebacker’s body. • You’ve got to hand it to Carson football coach Mark Woody. He hasn’t won a football game in the two years Carson High School has been in existence. But he is still a leader on that campus. And the people in Cougar Land still respect the job he’s doing. In fact, that’s why Woody was recently honored by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association with the Homer Thompson Memorial “Eight Who Make A Difference” Award. We’re predicting Carson gets its first win in 2008. How many wins do you think the Cougars will have? Tell me. • And finally … You seldom see the LPGA Tour on TV. Know why? Nobody has any idea who most of these players are. I looked at a recent list of golfers during a tournament: There’s Young Kim, Song-hee Kim and Budie Kim. Let’s not forget Angela Park, In bee Park, Gloria Park and Grace Park. How about Seon Hwa Lee, Jee Young Lee, Meena Lee and Sarah Lee? There’s somebody named Ji. There are two Kangs, one Jang, one Kung and one Hung. That is one wacky golf tour. As Andy Griffith once said, “They ain’t from around these parts, are they? Hey, I am outta here.
